I found a spare 160GB SATA Drive on which I have decided to install a trial of Win 10 to explore it further for now. I don't have the AHCI drivers and I'm not sure how to get them. The hard drive controller is one of the few which does not auto detect and accept changes under windows. (with regards to this problem). I have the driver CD that came with the motherboard, but I am not sure if it has Windows 10 drivers or not. Will there be a noticeable.

You need to install the correct driver for your AHCI storage controller before changing the mode in the BIOS.

If you don't do so, after switching the mode Windows cannot load the storage controller driver needed to access the boot volume. Because this driver is loaded before the Plug and Play Manager, Windows can't automatically detect or otherwise search for the correct driver.
Pre-installing the driver should solve this.
That said, you don't mention the reason you want to do this, but if it's for reason of performance, in my experience there's no difference between the two modes on Dell XPS machines.

There is actually another way around this.
Booting into Safe Mode will work even though the storage mode has been changed.. Windows will notice the change and load the correct driver on the next normal boot. Basically that means, you can do this:
- Run
cmd
as administrator (not PowerShell, you would have to escape{..}
) - Copy-paste this command, which will start Windows in Safe Mode the next time you reboot:
- Restart the computer and enter UEFI/BIOS setup.
- Change the SATA operation mode from RAID to AHCI.
- Save changes and exit Setup and Windows will automatically boot to Safe Mode.
- Launch
cmd
again, as in step #1. - Copy-paste this command, which will start Windows in Normal Mode the next time you reboot:
- Reboot and Windows will automatically start with AHCI drivers enabled.

Hey gang,
I'm having some current controller/ssd issues after recently installing windows 10 coming from windows 7 prof 64bit.
my Samsung SSD was working perfect with 7 and had no problems. Once I upgraded to 10 I'm finding a few issues sleeping/resuming and shutting down/restarting. I have a feeling this is because I have no viable AHCI driver installed. my computer only boots under IDE in Bios, so as you can imagine, the functionality of my drive is severely impacted from a performance standpoint. I've even tried to re-install my old AHCI driver that was supplied with my computer, but this too, will not install as windows says my net framework or intel rapid storage tech is not installed. (net framework 4.5 is installed I think natively, but intel rapid storage will not install)
(in device manager, this is how my disk is being represented)
